The SciFiWeekender returns to Pwllheli in March/April 2017 with another extravaganza of events, music, star guests and party fun! We have already announced several top-names for the event HERE (http://www.scifiweekender.com/news.html/SFW8latestnews/), including Buffy’s James Marsters, Doctor Who’s Paul McGann, Daphne Ashbrook, Frazer Hines and Wendy Padbury, Torchwood’s Gareth David-Lloyd and Outlander’s Duncan Lacroix & Steven Cree, as well as many other artists, authors and script writers … And now to these names we can add the following, all of whom are joining us for the celebration:
DARREN SHAN – Top YA horror author Darren Shan joins the Weekender to discuss horror and writing for kids … as well as how to scare their socks off! Darren was born in London but is Irish and lives with his wife and young son in a small village in Limerick where he has resided since the age of six. His breakthrough came with the publication of Cirque Du Freak in January 2000. He has now published close to fifty books, both for children and adults (the most recent adult novels have been released under the name of Darren Dash). Cirque Du Freak has been adapted into a (faithful) manga and a (rather less faithful) movie, and his books have sold twenty-five million copies worldwide. His books are on sale in 39 countries, in 31 languages. He has made bestseller charts in America, Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, and other countries.
JUSTINA ROBSON – SF scribe Justina was born in Yorkshire, England in 1968. After completing school she dropped out of Art College, then studied Philosophy and Linguistics at York University. She sold her first novel in 1999 which also won the 2000 amazon.co.uk Writers’ Bursary Award.
Her eleven books have been variously shortlisted for most of the major genre awards, including her latest novel Glorious Angels. An anthology of her short fiction, Heliotrope, was published in 2012. In 2004 Justina was a judge for the Arthur C Clarke Award on behalf of The Science Fiction Foundation.
Her novels and stories range widely over SF and Fantasy, often in combination and often featuring AIs and machines who aren’t exactly what they seem.
She is the proud author of The Covenant of Primus (2013) – the Hasbro-authorised history and ‘bible’ of The Transformers.
She lives in t’North of England with her partner, three children, a cat and a dog.
STEVE LOCKLEY – Fantasy/Horror master Steve Lockley is the author of around a hundred short stories, including contributions to a couple of Doctor Who anthologies. Many of his collaborations with Paul Lewis have been pulled together in the collection The Winter Hunt And Other Stories. His most recent novel is The Empty Desk, featuring the characters from the popular TV series, Ghost Whisperer. Steve also works as a freelance editor and has served as a judge for the World Fantasy Awards. He’s delighted to have been asked back to the SciFi Weekender!
PAUL LEWIS – Fantasy/Horror author Paul Lewis has written hundreds of comedy sketches for UK television, including Spitting Image and Hale & Pace, as well as radio sitcoms and plays. Paul has collaborated with Steve Lockley on several novellas and short stories and his solo stories have appeared in numerous anthologies and magazines. He is the author of fantasy novel The Savage Knight, published in 2011, and Small Ghosts, a novella being launched at the SciFi Weekender!
ED FORTUNE – Ed Fortune is the Literary Editor for Starburst Magazine and hosts a regular book inspired radio show called Brave New Words for Fab Radio International and The Wonky Spanner. He is also a writer and professional journalist who has written for magazines as diverse as Time Out and The Fortean Times. Ed has written a great many reviews on books, graphic novels, TV shows, movies and in one unusual case, a duck. He’s interviewed everyone from George RR Martin to Paddington Bear.
PAT SHARP – Pat presented his first daytime show 34 years ago for BBC Radio 1 at just twenty years of age back in 1982. Following a year on air, plus numerous ‘Top of the Pops’ TV appearances, he then went on to host mid mornings at 95.8 Capital FM for a decade. Along the way he picked up a gold Sony award whilst also notching up 7 hit singles and raising over £300,000 for charity as part of the infamous Stock Aitken Waterman duo ‘Pat & Mick’. He then took his mid-morning slot to #1 again at Heart London.
In 2011 Pat swapped life behind the microphone for life in the jungle as he joined ITV’s ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’ Pat joined US actress Stefanie Powers, Mark Wright, Dougie from McFly and Willie Carson amongst others. After the most successful and talked about series for many years Pat emerged from the jungle after competing with Fatima Whitbread in one of the most gruelling Bush Tucker trials ever. Recently he has appeared on ‘Eggheads’ BBC2 / ‘Coach Trip’ Ch 4 / Big Brother’s Big Mouth Ch 5 / Britain’s Got More Talent ITV 2 / Pointless Celebrities BBC1 / The Mcfly Show ITV / 30 Years Of CITV ITV / Pat is also a regular contributor on the Sky News Sunrise newspaper review.
For SciFi Weekender Pat will be DJing at one of the evening music events. So don’t miss his acclaimed set!
As well as these top names, we have the usual SciFiWeekender activities, with music and Cabaret on Thursday, Friday and Saturday Nights, with the acclaimed IMAGINARIUM of music, magic, comedy and dancers – a Variety bill for all the family – on the Friday night.
There is the popular CINEMA which will be showing a rosta of great curated films all weekend, including, hopefully, another exclusive premiere with cast and crew in attendance.
For 2017, we have expanded the event to make it even bigger and better, and so there is a second events and trading area: the TIMEPORT, in which you will find dealers selling all manner of goodies, as well as stage events, THE TOMBS OF THE CYBERMEN, with many Silver Giants in attendance and much more! This is in addition to the SPACEPORT where artists and traders can be found, alongside propmaking, gaming, cosplay and much, much more.
There are planned book launches (space is limited so get there early), book signings, meet-the-author talks and other activities taking place in this area too, complementing the familiar schedule of panels and discussions in Starbucks.
We’re pleased to welcome the acclaimed audio production company BIG FINISH to SciFiWeekender. The company has grown from small beginnings in 1999 to one of the most important producers of Audio drama in the UK. They release numerous ranges of drama, including their many acclaimed Doctor Who ranges, but also Sapphire and Steel, Survivors, Dorian Gray, The Avengers, Dark Shadows and many more. In addition, at the Big Finish table, top model-maker and effects maestro MIKE TUCKER will be in attendance, signing his audio and literary releases and chatting to anyone who wants to chat about the art of models in film and television! Mike has been sponsored by Big Finish for this event.
Other events include the traditional Quizzes and the panel game JUST A MINUTE … there’s a Virtual Reality area planned … live music from DAPHNE ASHBROOK and AERO TWISTED ft LINZI GOLD … the popular Masquerade and Cosplay Competition return, ably administered by the good folk from ARTYFAKES … and there are TWO music venues planned for late Friday Night, one hosted by Pat Sharp! So if your musical tastes run varied, there should be something you’ll enjoy.
